How Much Does a Solar Generator Cost? Price Ranges Explained

By James Paul October 14, 2026

If you've started pricing solar generators, you've probably seen numbers anywhere from a couple of hundred dollars to well over $10,000, and it's hard to tell what the extra money gets you. In our store, a small solar generator costs $240 to $550, a mid-size home backup unit like the Jackery Explorer 1500 V2 costs $750 to $900, and a large unit like the Anker SOLIX F3800 Plus costs $1,500 to $2,400. Whole-home systems start a little over $4,000 and climb past $10,000 once you add batteries and panels.

When people call us about price, the first thing we ask is what you need to keep running. A fridge, a CPAP and a few lights through the night fit the mid-size range. But a kettle or microwave pulls 1,000 to 1,500 watts, and if you switch one on just as the fridge's compressor kicks in and draws its starting surge (the short burst of extra power a motor needs to get going), a small unit overloads and shuts off. A 240-volt well pump or central air puts you in the large range or above.

Solar Generator Cost by Size

As of 2026, our prices by battery size look like this, so check the product page for current pricing before you set your budget.

Size Battery Price in our store What you can power in an outage
Small Up to about 1,000Wh $240 to $550 Phones, laptops, lights and a CPAP for a night. Only the bigger units in this range can handle a kettle or microwave.
Mid-size About 1,500 to 2,400Wh $750 to $900 A full-size fridge, a CPAP and lights through the night, plus a kettle or microwave in short bursts
Large About 3,000 to 3,800Wh $1,500 to $2,400 All of that plus a sump pump, and 240-volt loads on models like the Anker SOLIX F3800 Plus
Very large 5,000 to 7,200Wh $3,100 to $4,200 Your essential home circuits through a transfer switch

At the small end, you'll find good solar generators under $500 for camping trips and outage basics. And if you'd like to compare every size at once, our portable solar generators collection has them side by side.

What Affects Solar Generator Cost

When two solar generators look alike and one costs twice as much, you're usually paying for a bigger battery, more inverter output or better battery cells. A bigger battery, measured in watt-hours (Wh), keeps your devices going longer. With more inverter output, measured in watts (W), you can switch more on at the same time.

You can't tell what a solar generator will cost from its battery size, either. As of 2026, the OSCAL PowerMax 2400 holds 2,400Wh with 2,200 watts of output, and it costs about $110 less in our store than the Jackery Explorer 2000 V2, which has the same output and a smaller 2,042Wh battery. You'll also pay more or less depending on the battery chemistry, how fast the unit recharges, how far you can expand it and the warranty, so compare the whole spec sheet before you decide.

Solar Generator Cost With and Without Panels

Panels are where a lot of people get caught out, because the power station you first see usually comes without any way to charge it from the sun. Take the BLUETTI AC200P L. As of 2026, it costs $1,099 on its own in our store, $1,539 with a PV200 200W solar panel and $1,899 with a larger PV350 panel.

Bought separately, the PV200 costs $499, so you save about $60 by getting it in the bundle. And when you're deciding how much panel to add, one 200W panel produces up to 200 watts in full sun, so you'll need well over 10 hours of strong sunshine to refill a 2,000Wh battery from empty.

You'll find units already paired with panels in our solar panel generators collection.

Solar Generator Cost for Home Backup

Once you want to keep more than a few essentials going, the cost climbs fast, because you're paying for a bigger inverter, more battery and the equipment to connect it all to your home. As of 2026, the Jackery Explorer 5000 Plus costs $3,149 on its own and $3,989 with a Smart Transfer Switch, and the EcoFlow DELTA Pro Ultra costs $4,199 on its own and $12,199 with five extra batteries. An electrician and permits add to that, so you'll want to see the full picture of whole-house solar generator prices before you commit, and you'll find these bigger systems in our home backup solar generators collection.

Long-Term Solar Generator Cost Compared With Gas

The price you pay on day one is only part of what you'll spend, though, because you keep paying for a gas generator every time you use it. In an off-grid cabin setup we wrote about in 2025, the EcoFlow system cost about $3,500 up front and nothing to fuel or maintain afterward. A comparable gas generator cost about $1,000 up front, plus around $150 a year in maintenance and $600 a year in fuel and oil. At those numbers, the extra cost of solar was paid back in about three years.

Those are 2025 figures from a cabin that used its generator every day, so check current fuel and equipment prices first. If you only fire up a generator during the odd outage, you'll burn far less fuel and take longer to make back the extra cost of solar. You also skip the oil changes and the cold-morning pull starts, so weigh the everyday pros and cons of solar generators alongside the payback.

Setting a Budget for Solar Generator Cost

When you sit down to set a budget, add up the watts of everything you'd want on at the same time, plus the starting surge of your biggest motor, which is usually the fridge. Then work out how many hours you need it all powered, and add panels to the total if your unit doesn't come with them. If price is the deciding factor, there are good budget solar generators that can keep a fridge and a few essentials going.

With those numbers in hand, compare units in the same capacity and output range, and you'll quickly see which extras you're paying for. If you'd like a second opinion, give us a call at (954) 249-2314 and tell us what you need to keep running. We're a family-owned business in Fort Lauderdale, and we'll help you size your setup so you're not paying for battery you'll never use.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to get a solar generator shipped fast before a storm?

More than most people expect, and often it isn't possible. During storms we get a lot of calls asking for overnight shipping, but most manufacturers don't offer it, and where they do, shipping can cost up to twice the generator. That's why we tell people to order early in hurricane season (June 1 to November 30).

Does paying more always get me more run time?

No. Divide the price by the battery's watt-hours to compare cost per watt-hour. As of 2026, the Pecron E3600 works out to about 46 cents per watt-hour ($1,399 for 3,072Wh), and the Anker SOLIX C1000 Gen2 to about 54 cents ($549.99 for 1,024Wh). Then check the output, because cheap watt-hours won't do you any good if the inverter can't start your fridge.

Can a bigger battery power an appliance that needs more watts than the generator's rated output?

No. A bigger battery only lasts longer at the same output. So if a device draws more watts than the unit's continuous output, you'll need a higher-output model, or you'll have to switch your loads on one at a time.

Does a solar generator cost anything once you've bought it?

Very little. Charging from your panels costs nothing, and charging from a wall outlet adds a little to your power bill. The bigger long-term cost is the battery itself, which slowly loses capacity over thousands of charge cycles, so check the cycle rating and warranty before you buy.
